We've been fortunate to have Two Birds One stone perform at our SOUL4SOUL showcase & we're looking forward to the new record from Lauren. She is definitely one to watch in the future.

KIRK WHALUM
Soulful, passionate, stirring...these are the words most often used to describe Kirk's music. Forged from his Memphis, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980's initiation into the thriving Houston, TX nightclub scene, Kirk's big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.
Kirk later became an in demand session player for top artists like, Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston, amongst many others. It's his sax heard on the mega-hit, "I Will Always Love You."
An eleven time Grammy nominee, Kirk won his first Grammy award for Best Gospel Song ("It's What I Do"-featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted writer, Jerry Peters.
His latest release (on Mack Ave. Records) is perhaps his most ambitious to date. On Romance Language Kirk pays homage to the much revered 1963 ballads album, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman.
In a career spanning decades, Kirk has a sound that is uniquely his; it is a sound that leaves an indelible imprint on the listener.

A session of live music returns this month with our special guests, Coffee and Cakes For Funerals.
The four piece, Liverpool based band consists of Joe Hazlett on vocals, Andrew Finney on drums and backing vocals, Aaron Schofield on bass and Michael Blackburn on guitar. They have all been active members of the Liverpool music scene for some years covering a wide range of musical styles and are all most at home when writing music or on stage performing.
Coffee And Cakes For Funerals' first self-titled EP was recorded in late 2011, and they aimed to capture a creative mix of Dr. Dre's neck breaking beats and dirty pocket bass along with Radiohead's introverted, artistic look on life. The combination of punchy drums, simple, heavy bass lines and sublime guitars with an unforgettable vocal performance means this record will be hard to put down.

This saturday sees the likes of Misha B, Terri Walker, Kof, Esco Williams, Jay Norton & other great performers come together for the 7th Anthony Walker festival commemorating the life of Anthony Walker who was murdered in an unprovoked racist attack.
It's a free event that will be held at the Liverpool Guild (University of Liverpool) from 12 - 8pm.

Last week seen the release of the The Bravest Man In the Universe from the Legendary singer/songwriter Bobby Womack. It's Bobby's first album of original material since his 1994 LP entitled Resurrection. The new album is co-produced by Damon Albarn ( Blur, Gorillaz ) & Richard Russell ( XL Recordings- Home to Adele, MIA, The XX, Radiohead).
Notable tracks on the LP include Dayglo Reflection featuring the talented Lana Del Rey, The Bravest Man in the Universe, Please forgive my heart and the new single, Whatever happened to the times.
It's quite difficult to pick a favourite track on the album as it's probably one of the albums of the year in my opinion. I suggest you add this LP to your music collection :)

Snarky Puppy Releases New Live DVD with 3-Month International Tour
Brooklyn, New York - January 17, 2012 - Snarky Puppy is spending an unprecedented 3 consecutive months on the road this winter and spring supporting their brand new DVD/CD "Ground Up", released officially on February 28th through their own recently-launched record label, GroundUP Music (a sublabel of Ropeadope Records).
For the very first time, this tour will take the band all the way to the United Kingdom and France as well as every major market in the United States. Always focused on music education, Snarky Puppy will be giving clinics and masterclasses at various educational institutions throughout the trip in addition to their scheduled concerts. Joining them for the UK leg of the tour is groundbreaking London electro-pop duo "The Fix."
"Ground Up" was filmed and recorded live over 3 nights in legendary bassist Matt Garrison's new performance space, Shapeshifter Lab, in front of a 40-person studio audience. Similar to the setting of their last live album/DVD, "Tell Your Friends" (Ropeadope Records, 2010), the new project captures the rawness and spontaneity of Snarky Puppy's live energy, but this time in a stripped-down Brooklyn warehouse.
The core of the group, which remains consistent, features Grammy Award-winners Robert "Sput" Searight on drums (God's Property, Snoop Dogg) and Shaun Martin on keys (Kirk Franklin, Erykah Badu). Led by award-winning bassist/composer Michael League, Snarky Puppy delivers raw funk and sensitive dynamics, relentless pocket and lyrical melodicism, lush harmony and soulful simplicity, and most importantly, a delicate mixture of composition and improvisation.

When rumours surfaced last year that D'angelo was in the studio working on some new material, most people were unsure if he will be able to replicate the brilliance of his 2 albums. It's safe to say D hasn't lost it - footage of his concert in Stockholm a few days surfaced on the internet & the social networks have been buzzing for days. His European tour will be hitting our shores next weekend :).
